A guy named Gino Paoli is the one who made this song famous, but to me its always sounded like a kid’s song so when I found an animated version by “Marty and his friends” online, it seemed like a perfect fit!  Take a listen (and check out the lyric translation below), and tell me if you don’t think the kids in the cartoon are a little more believable than good ol’ Gino…

“La Gatta”

C’era una volta una gatta (Once upon a time a cat)
che aveva una macchia nera sul muso (who had a black spot on its face)
e una vecchia soffitta vicino al mare (and an old attic near the sea)
con una finestra a un passo dal cielo blu. (with a window a step away from the blue sky)

Se la chitarra suonavo (If I played the guitar)
la gatta faceva le fusa ed una (the cat would purr and …)
stellina scendeva vicina, vicina (…a small star would descend close, close)
poi mi sorrideva e se ne tornava su. (then it would smile at me and return back up)

Ora non abito più là, (Now I don’t live there anymore)
tutto è cambiato, non abito più là, (Everything has changed, I don’t live there anymore)
Ho una casa bellissima, (I have a beautiful house)
bellissima come vuoi tu. (As beautiful as you could want it to be)

Ma, io ripenso a una gatta (But, I think again of a cat)
che aveva una macchia nera sul muso (that had a black spot on its nose)
a una vecchia soffitta vicino al mare (in an old attic near the sea)
con una stellina, che ora non vedo più. (with a small star, that I no longer see)

. . . . . .

And for those of you who are interested, here’s Gino’s version:
