On a trip to Italy five years ago, I discovered what has become one of my favorite vacation activities: hiking (in other words, wandering around the countryside). Simply walking outside of the walls of a small Tuscan or Umbrian village and exploring the hills and forests surrounding it. It taught me how importance silence can be, that in the silence of nature you begin to hear things you’d otherwise miss. First, the sounds of birds singing and animals scurrying underfoot. Then, the rush of the wind blowing through the trees. And finally, if you listen carefully, yourself.
